On the 13th November 2002 a storm rages off the Gallician Coast. The 29 year old tanker Prestige is caught in the middle of the storm and loses 6000 tonne of its 77.000 tonne heavy fuel cargo. On the 19th November the tanker finally breaks and loses in total about 60.000 tonnes of heavy fuel. At this point the oil spill reaches almost 1200 km², 90 miles off the Spanish coast.
